The Giving Season

It’s no secret that we are quite the dog lovers here at Urban Hound Playground!! This holiday season, we would like to take that love a step further and give back to dogs in need by sponsoring a Giving Tree for the wonderful people and pups of Safe Hands Animal Rescue. Safe Hands Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization based here in Minneapolis, with a staff made up exclusively of volunteers. Each animal in their rescue lives with a foster family while awaiting adoption, allowing volunteers to truly get to know the personalities and individual needs of each dog in order to place them with the appropriate forever home. Safe Hands Animal Rescue also provides each animal with the age-appropriate shots needed until adoption, and they also  take care of spaying and neutering. This year alone Safe Hands Animal Rescue has found forever homes for over 600 pets. Their mission statement is one that we here at UHP align ourselves closely with, “To create a world where all companion animals are loved, respected and have a home.”

With the Giving Tree, our customers will have the opportunity to give back as well. Be sure to be on the lookout for a tree going up in our lobby here at UHP. The tree will feature ornaments with  various items the rescue is in need of. Customers will be able to choose an ornament, purchase the item listed and bring it back to UHP to place under the tree to be donated to Safe Hands Animal Rescue. Monetary donations are also being accepted. We will begin accepting donations starting next weekend and continue to accept them through December 21st.
The giving spirit continues here at Urban Hound Playground as we are now offering gift certificates! Customers can purchase gift certificates for our regular packages as well as a few new specials. Stop in today to inquire for the perfect gift for the dog lover in your life!

Spotlight: Harvey!
Breed: Hound Mix
Nickname(s): Harv
Favorite Toys: Plush Toys!
Favorite Activities: Playing with his friends, relaxing and receiving belly rubs
Been at UHP since: 03/16
Best Doggy Buddies:Charlie, Varjo and Milton

The spotlight on this dog is extra special because he happens to be a rescue from our friends at Safe Hands Animal Rescue! Harvey is an 8-year-old white and tan hound mix. For Harvey, what started off as a foster home through the rescue ended up being his forever home! Although this technically makes him a “foster fail” we think Harvey got pretty darn lucky when it comes to his forever family. His brother, Charlie, is also a part of the pack at UHP! They certainly are a fun pair of brothers to have at daycare! Harvey has been with his family since last year and has been attending UHP since March of this year. Harvey is one of the calmest and most loving souls you could meet. He is always up for playing with his puppy friends or a good belly rub from his human friends.

10 Doggy Dailies at UHP

Ever wonder what your sweet pups are up to while they’re at Urban Hound Playground? Well, wonder no more! We’ve put together a list of the top ten things your dogs do while playing and staying here at UHP.
  1. Get dropped off! Our busiest times for drop-offs at UHP are between 7:00-10:00am. This tends to work out nicely because the dogs come in at similar energy levels and are therefore ready to rest around the same time. As soon as each dog arrives we bring them outside. This gives the dogs a chance to get acclimated to their surroundings and use the bathroom before heading inside to play. While many dogs stay for a full day of daycare, we have a handful of regulars that come for half-days as well. We have been seeing that noon is another particularly busy hour as well due to half-day dogs being picked up or dropped off.

  2. Go Outside! After their initial trip outside, we make it our goal to bring the dogs out at least once per hour, weather permitting. If the weather is nice we like to try and give the dogs as much fresh air time as possible. As the outside area is paved, staff is diligent about checking the temperature of the blacktop throughout the day. If needed, we spray it down prior to the dogs coming outside in order to avoid any blistering of paws! When the dogs are feeling playful and the weather is warm, we like to pull out the kiddie pools and sprinklers for them to enjoy! We also have play equipment set up outside for the dogs to play on and sometimes even snooze under. For the times when energy is running low, we have cots set up in the shade for the dogs to lay down and relax on.

  3. Play! Whether it’s outside or in, we always try to make sure your dog is having fun and expelling energy. We have play equipment both outside and in for your dogs to enjoy, as well as toys galore! We do our best to do toy time as often as we can. One thing we really try to be aware of is whether or not any of the dogs in our care have any tendencies to be toy possessive around other dogs. If this is the case, we try to give dogs individual toy time with one of our staff members in order to ensure the safety of all our dogs.  We have also found that bubbles tend to be quite popular among the pups. Each playroom is stocked with its own set of bubbles for an additional activity for the dogs to enjoy.

  4. Eat Lunch! Due to the fact that the dogs play so much and burn off lots energy, we often recommend that owners bring lunch for their dogs, especially when the dog is staying for a full day. If the dog is crate-trained, we like to lay them down with a soft blanket and encourage them to try and take a nap for about 20-30 minutes in order to ensure their food is properly digested.

  5. Hydrate! The dogs play so much each day, lots of water is a must at UHP! We like to have two water bowls present in each playroom at all times. Staff is constantly monitoring water bowl levels to ensure your dog can get a drink whenever they need it.

  6. Rest! As the day goes on the dogs get more tired. Usually between 12:00-2:00pm we start to see more and more dogs ready to take a rest. If the majority of the dogs appear ready to rest at the same time, we will often turn down the lights and turn on some soothing instrumental music in order to encourage resting. The playrooms are complete with cots, soft beds, blankets and even a couple of crates in order for the dogs to choose where they feel most comfortable resting.

  7. Make New Friends! Urban Hound Playground is steadily growing each week with new wagging tails being added to our wonderful pack. This gives all of the dogs a chance to make new playmates and snuggle buddies! We often see that when dogs hit it off, they tend to play with each other each time they end up at daycare on the same days.

  8. Celebrate! Here at Urban Hound Playground, we love a good doggy party! We like to celebrate each dog’s birthday, as well as major holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Easter and the 4th of July. Parties are complete with decorations, holiday attire for the pups and even healthy treats on occasion!

  9. Pose for Pictures! Our staff members have grown into quite talented dog photographers, capturing your pups every move whether they are playing, cuddling with a best friend or resting. We post photos almost everyday on our Facebook account, as well as weekly uploads to our instagram, be sure to check them out!

  10. Heads Home or Sleeps Over! The majority of our daycare dogs are picked up between 5:00-7:00pm. Our regulars have become pretty in-tune with the process and have learned that when the phone rings in the playroom, someone’s mom or dad is here! For our boarding dogs, we feed them dinner between 5:00-6:00pm, and then try to work out that last bit of energy before bedtime by playing more and going outside a few more times.

This blog's spotlight will focus on our good pal, Sheldon! Sheldon’s mom rescued him from the Golden Valley Animal Humane Society when he was just two months old. His mom gave him the name Sheldon because she likes the old man feel it has to it. Sheldon has been coming to Urban Hound Playground since January of this year. Sheldon currently holds the record for the most visits to UHP!  Sheldon is also quite popular with other owners, as he is one of the dogs most frequently asked about after people have looked at our facebook page. While Sheldon takes a little time to get used to new people and dogs, once you’re in, you’re in for life. Sheldon LOVES to snuggle and prefers to take his naps up at the front desk. He even sometimes wiggles his way out of the playroom to come up for a visit. He loves to greet his friends that come in and often likes to “dance” with them. Sheldon absolutely LOVES when people sing to him. His mom let us know this fun fact and one day we decided to give it a try. Turns out it’s the truth! Instead of saying “Sheldon, come!” he has trained the entire staff to sing out  “Doot da doo SHELDON!!” Sure enough, he comes running and wagging his tail every time. We hope you enjoyed learning about our unofficial mascot that we love so much, sweet Sheldon. Be on the lookout for his cute face in our upcoming facebook posts!

Happy Birthday from Urban Hound!

For those of you who are new to Urban Hound Playground, if you bring your dog into daycare on or near their birthday, we throw them a birthday party! Parties are complete with decorations, puppy friends, lots of playing and cute photos for the parents to check out afterwards! Trust us, we know how to throw a good doggy party! We've recently celebrated two birthdays here at UHP and thought we would share some of the fun!

First, we celebrated Varjo turning one on July 29th. Varjo is a Finnish Lapphund who has been coming to play and stay at UHP since January of this year. Varjo is a curious, playful and cuddly pooch who loves playing with his friends. Varjo also thoroughly enjoys chasing balls but his  absolute favorite activity is chasing bubbles! Enjoy these photos of him and his doggy buddies on his big day!

Happy Birthday Varjo! For more pictures of Varjo’s birthday party check out our facebook page.

Next up, Willow’s sixth birthday was on August 1st and we threw a party for her when she came into daycare on August 4th! Willow is a black lab mix and was one of our first dogs to come play at UHP. Willow has been coming to play at UHP since December of 2015. Willow is the perfect mix of sweet and sassy! She’s a very gentle soul but isn’t afraid to tell the others when she thinks they’re playing too hard. Willow also absolutely loves to sunbathe. No matter the temperature, as long as there is sun, she’s a happy girl. Here's a peek of Willow and the gang at her party!

Happy Birthday Willow! For more pictures of Willow’s birthday party check out our facebook page.

We can't wait to celebrate your dog's birthday!!

An Urban Hound Playground Update!

We hope everyone has been having a wonderful summer so far! Over the past few months Urban Hound Playground has been steadily growing, and we thought it was time to give our cherished current and inquiring customers an update of all the awesome things happening here at UHP. We are proud to report that we have surpassed the six month mark of being open. Better yet, the number of dogs we have in daycare continues to grow each week! Many of the dogs who attend our Meet and Greets have quickly become familiar faces here at UHP. Many of our regulars have settled into nice routines, such as coming every Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday- and even some we get to see every day! We always try to accommodate owners’ schedules as best as we can!

While we started out with one big playroom, we have now added white fencing, allowing us to now have five playrooms for your precious pooches to enjoy. Having the additional playrooms allows for closer supervision of the dogs, as well as the ability to accommodate all shapes, sizes and temperaments. Above all, it helps us ensure that your dogs have a safe and fun experience during their stay here at UHP. We have been successful at accommodating all kinds of dogs, from large great danes down to little french bulldogs. Our toy collection is ever-growing for those that enjoy toy time. Our staff has done a lot of research, and even enlisted a few of our regular pups to be toy testers :) So if you need any advice as to which toys Fido or Rufus would most enjoy- and better yet not destroy, we’ve got you covered!

The dogs admiring the new fencing!!

These squeaky rings made by Kong have been tug-o-war tested and approved!!

This summer has proved to be a hot one so we have invested in some fun sprinklers and even kiddie pools to keep the pups cool! In fact, the kiddie pools were such a hit with the dogs, we had to run out and purchase two more after the original! Here at Urban Hound Playground we understand that it is not always ideal to pick up a wet pooch, so we always try to end it around 2:00pm to help ensure your dog is nice and dry by the time they are picked up. If you would prefer your dog not participate in water play, just let a UHP staff member know and we will make sure to accommodate your request.

Bailey enjoys some sprinkler fun!!!                       Deacon and Winny go for a dip!!!

Last week some of our awesome staff members (if we do say so ourselves!) were a part of the Diamond Lake Neighborhood Business Alliance Ice Cream Social. We were SO excited to meet some new friends as well as see some familiar faces and wagging tails. We’re so grateful to all of those who braved the heat on Thursday in order to show their support not only for Urban Hound Playground, but all of the other wonderful businesses that we are proud to call our neighbors. Thank goodness for that ice cream though, right?!

Our resident in-house baking wiz, Emma, along with Julie, made some adorable and healthy homemade treats in the shape of bones, which we gave away for both the dogs that braved the heat and those that stayed cool at home. As an added bonus for those pups that did come out, Emma and Julie made some frozen yogurt treats topped with peanut butter. Any dog that stopped by our booth gobbled them right up! Don’t worry, we had treats for the humans too!
We’d like to give a special shout-out to our doggy friends Fred and Sonny, as well as their awesome owners, for stopping by and supporting Urban Hound Playground! Fred and Sonny are two dogs that truly make all of us here at UHP excited to come to work every day!

        Mr. Fred!!
Mr. Sonny!!

We thought it would be a fun idea for each new post on the blog to showcase a different regular each time. These are the dogs that consistently come at least once a week, every week. You all see the photos we post every week and we often get owners asking more questions about the silly faces they see, so we thought this would be a good way for owners to get to know their dogs’ daycare friends!

Our first spotlight will be dedicated to Mr. Fred!
Birthdate: 7/24/15
Breed: Lab/Cattledog Mix
Coloring: Tan/White/Black
Nickname: Freddy
Favorite Toy: Balls or anything that squeaks, especially the kong ring!
Been at UHP since: 1/2/16
Best Doggy Buddies: Lionel, Shephard, Hank (tan), Daisy and Ozzie

Fred’s parents rescued him from Luv Me Again Animal Rescue when he was just eight weeks old. He and his litter-mates were all named after the Flintstones, and Fred’s parents thought it was a good fit for him, and we have to agree. Fred was one of UHP’s first dogs and quickly became one our favorite regulars! He’s been coming to play since January of this year, when he was only five months old! While he’s grown a lot in size, he’s also grown pretty deeply into all of our hearts. Fred likes it so much here that he’s even brought a few of his friends to play as well! One of those friends happens to be his cousin, Lionel! When they’re together it’s double the trouble but also double the fun! Fred is very playful, loving, full of energy and always up for a good snuggle! In fact, we’re pretty sure he thinks he’s a lap dog ;) He quickly makes friends with all other dogs and staff members he meets, and is especially friendly to the new dogs that come in. He’s always up for toy time or a dip in the pool outside. Plus those adorable puppy eyes and that Fred head tilt, how could one resist?! We hope you enjoyed learning a little more about Fred and why we love him so much!
We also celebrated Fred’s first birthday this week! Happy Birthday, Fred!! Be sure to check out our facebook page for some more cute pictures of his UHP birthday party!!
